- Rates of suicide for Active Component service members have increased over time (2011 to 2024).
- As of 2023, the Active Component service member suicide rate is higher than the overall U.S. population rate of suicide.
Veterans
- The suicide rate per 100,000 Veterans rose for both male and female Veterans in 2023.
- Suicide rates are elevated for Veterans aged 18 to 34, and those with certain risk characteristics, including homelessness, health problems, and pain.
MilVet Family Members
- Suicide rates for Total Force family members have increased over time (2011 to 2023).
- 65% of military spouse suicides are men.
- Veteran spouse suicide deaths are hard to capture through current data sources, leaving a gap in our knowledge.
