The Challenge

A-G was awarded a subcontract to Abt Associates in support of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s (SAMHSA) Evidence Based Resource Contract (EBRC). To assist the EBRC Team, A-G engaged subject matter experts that provided content expertise to produce comprehensive, multi-chapter guides on various topics.

Services

The development of each guide includes the following:

  • Consolidation and analysis of known information on a subject, utilizing environmental scans
  • Evaluation and synthesis of the research and data relevant to a subject, such as a literature review
  • Analysis and summary of discussion and recommendations from technical expert panels related to a subject
  • Other analysis and syntheses necessary to produce comprehensive guide materials

Impact

A-G’s work has resulted in the development of guidebooks that will be extremely important to community leaders, healthcare providers, policymakers, and experts in the behavioral health field. Specific topic areas are listed below.

Year One guidebooks distributed on SAMHSA’s website include:

  • Vaping: Preventing electronic cigarette use among youth
  • HIV: Focus on mental health, prevention and treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring HIV/AIDS and viral hepatitis infections
  • Stimulants: Strategies to prevent and treat stimulant use, focus on methamphetamines among tribes/maybe poly-drug use
  • Suicide: Interventions to identify and treat suicidal ideation, self-harm, and suicide attempts in a variety of clinical settings- outpatient, inpatient, primary, and specialty care
  • SED: Strategies to increase treatment engagement for adolescents with serious emotional disturbance and co-occurring substance use disorder

Year Two guidebook topics include:

  • Telehealth for the treatment of serious mental illness (SMI) and SUD
  • Screening and treatment of mental health concerns among transition-aged students (18-25-year-olds) on college campuses
  • Treatment for poly substance use disorders
  • Preventing marijuana use among youth
  • Treatment of SMI in older adults
