UNITED STATES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
The Challenge
In 2019, Congress passed the Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Healthcare Improvement Act. The bipartisan legislation provided a comprehensive approach to strengthen and expand existing services, connect more Veterans with mental healthcare services, and address the specific needs of transitioning service members, rural Veterans, and other special populations. The Hannon Act complements the Clay Hunt Act, the PREVENTS Task Force, and MISSION Act by expanding healthcare choices for Veterans.
Services
A-G leads the program support efforts for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OMHSP) and its efforts in preventing Veteran suicide. We provided study design, data collection and analysis, and report writing services to ensure compliance with Section 401, which mandates the evaluation of the VA’s current outreach efforts on suicide prevention, specifically the #BeThere campaign, Lethal Means Safety, and Veterans Crisis Line efforts.
Impact
A-G’s experts understand the complexities of suicide, as well as best practices in prevention and behavioral health program development, combined with data analysis and research methodologies. This enables the Veteran’s Health Administration to communicate the areas where it has made significant progress and provide recommendations to address areas where progress has been deficient. The outcomes from this project will help inform papers, materials, and overall efforts to lower suicide rates in the military and Veteran communities and expand access to mental health programs and resources. The final report showing the results of this evaluation will be provided to Congress, and it may have a significant impact that informs future suicide prevention campaigns and efforts.
